First up is HP.

This advertising campaign is by far by favorite in the past year or two. It's gets across the idea that is so frequently left out in modern advertising. Everyone wants to tell you that their product is about you, it's personalised for your needs. However, the only campaign that's effectively conveyed this idea is HP. Through their use of fairly well recognized celebs (Mark Cuban, Sean White, more?), you can identify on a personal level with them. Everyone keeps their photos on their computer...but the use of the cool hand gestures with some computer animation helps to show that your computer is you. Two thumbs up to HP for a REALLY cool and catchy graphics animation that actually makes sense in the context. Their motto, "The computer is personal again" exactly mirrors the idea.

Similarly, Blackberry has also been running a series of ads VERY similar to HP. Theirs is a collage of "life scenes" that blend together into a Blackberry unit.

"Connect to everything you love in life, with Blackberry." Ah, what an appeal to our emotional side, if I only had one of those everything in my life would be ok. I think it's a rip off of the HP ad, but still good ad.

Now we get to Apple. Most people know I have a grudge against Apple. Why? Because they are so FREAKING proprietary. Meaning that they keep things extremely controlled. For instance, did you know that when the Iphone first came out, you couldn't make applications for it? That's right, there was no Shazam, no Geocaching app, no Shotgun free, no Power Hour, no nothing. What? You didn't know that!? That's understandable, because look at their newest ad campaign:

OMG THOSE ARE SO COOL. I WANT THOSE APPS. Yeah, but wait a second...Apple doesn't actually make any of those apps. That's right, the entire basis of their new campaign is featuring this they didn't actually make. Not only that, but things they banned from the first version of the phone. The ability to add applications came only after users had hacked the phone to add the functionality (Similarly with the 3.0 update that's about to come out). Maybe Apple is just lazy? In any case, the Iphone is really cool, it's well designed and awesome. The thing is that it seems so terribly hypocritical to tout this as the big thing. Oh well, I want one ;)

Finally, Airtran. This is the pinnacle of targeted advertising. It's perfection. I'm sorry, I can't link to these directly in my blog, but YOU NEED TO SEE THESE.

I never saw these on tv, but they are awesome. They do everything a commercial is supposed to. I can relate to every second of that, but I find it funny because "Everyone will want to be 21". OHMIGOD, I'm in that age bracket! I need to fly with them. But seriously, it's the best commercial I've seen that relates to my age group. It appeals to our sense of self-awesomeness, telling us that we are cool, and that Airtran is for us. Meaning Airtran is cool. Nuff said.

So that's the advertising train. I'd write more, but it's time to be hitting that old dusty trail. Hope you enjoyed my commercial picks of the year!
